R. Brown McAllister Named a Top Performing School R. Brown McAllister Elementary School has been named a Title I Reward School by the United States Department of Education (USED). R. Brown is designated High Performance School. The top ten percent of all Reward Schools are North Carolina’s 2015 nominees for the National Title I Distinguished Schools Recognition Program. North Carolina will be permitted to select one Title I school to proudly represent the state at the national level in one of two categories. One school will be selected for high performance and one school will be selected for high progress. Congratulations to R. Brown McAllister Principal Sandy Ward, the students and staff on this great accomplishment. In the Community – CMS Showing Support Concord Middle School joined the Cabarrus Partnership for Children, Cabarrus Health Alliance and Invision Eye Care during the fall for an informative and fun day in the Logan Community. Families were able to shop for clothing, shoes, winter coats, and purses, enjoy a meal, and win raffles prizes and gift cards. There were also activities for children, including fun bounce houses. JMRHS Robotics Team Receives Grant The Jay M. Robinson High School competitive VEX Robotics Team 5139 received a $1,000 grant from the IBM Community Grant program. The team will use the funds to begin launching VEX IQ, the elementary robotics platform. It will purchase an official IQ playing field and other VEX IQ materials for CCS elementary schools to study and use to compete at the N.C. State Championship competition, which Robinson will host in March. The VEX Robotics Team applied for the grant through a team parent who works for IBM. Under the leadership of Coach David Parisi, the team submitted a proposal outlining how the funds would be used and completed an engineering challenge from IBM. The IBM Community Grants Program supports employees and retirees who volunteer regularly with not-for-profit organizations. 8 •Jan/Feb 2015 • Parent Teacher Magazine  Board Cork news MPES and CHS Support Children’s Advocacy Center Mount Pleasant Elementary School collected $1,171.11 to support the School Nurses Clothing Drive to benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center. The Concord High School Leadership Class also participated by donating several bags of clothing. MPES students raised the funds by allowing students to vote with money for the staff member they most wanted to get a pie in the face. Principal Corey Cochran, Assistant Principal Deborah Burris, PE Teacher Eric Laws, Media Coordinator Laurel Reisen, and School Resource Officer Jacob Barrier were the candidates. Mrs. Burris won the contest and received a pie in the face from School Nurse Laura Bryant in front of the entire student body. NCHS Wins Theater Awards Congratulations are in order for the advanced theater classes at Northwest Cabarrus High School (NCHS). Students and staff excelled at the North Carolina Theatre Conference (NCTC) regional One-Act Festival, garnering the following awards: • Super Ratings: Tatterhood and the Hobgoblins and Kiss a Squid • Honorable Mention in Acting: Destiny Castro, Austin Gange, Ashley Wineberger • Excellence in Ensemble Acting: Kiss a Squid • Technical Award in Sound and Stage Management: Courtney Wethington • Directing: Andy Rassler NCHS competed in the NCTC state One-Act Play Festival with an original piece, Kiss a Squid, which was written by their director Andy Rassler. At the state festival, NCHS student Austin Gange received an Honorable Mention award for Acting, which was held in November. Congratulations to the NCHS Theater program!
