Role of a School Nurse Research Supports • Schools with full-time school nurses help students with chronic illness better manage their disease and decrease time out of school. • Students better manage their chronic illness that it can have a positive impact on their success at school. • Fewer children leave school before the end of the day due to medical reasons when a nurse is on campus. Advocate Serves as a liaison between the school, family, community and healthcare provider to advocate for health care and a healthy school environment. • Work to ensure that students are happy, healthy, in class, focused and read to learn. Use nursing knowlege and judgement to provide health care to students and staff. Referrals Performs health screenings and coordinates referrals to healthcare providers helping to eliminate barriers to learning. Public Health • Parents report that they worry less about their children who have chronic illness when a shcool nurse is there. • The work that school nurses do contributes to healthier students and a safer school environment. Knowledge Care Management Develop and execute plans of care management for students with health needs addressing daily emergency management. Engage in public health functions such as communicable disease surveillance, immunization compliance, vision and dental screens. Wellness Promotes health and wellness among students and staff. Care Coordination School nurses actively collaborate with others to build student and family’s capacity for adaptation, self-management self-advocacy and learning through school-based case management.
