Two Cabarrus County Schools teachers received awards to participate in Go Global NC ’ s Global Teachers annual professional development program . Paige Norris , 2017 district Teacher of the Year and kindergarten and first grade teacher at Rocky River Elementary , and Stephanie Baucom , mathematics teacher at Opportunity School represented Cabarrus County Schools in China this summer as members of a delegation of 35 teachers from across North Carolina . Go Global NC ’ s Global Teachers – China 2018 program allowed participants to :
• Gain insight into the country ’ s history , culture , and physical environment
• Learn about conservation efforts to protect rare animals and environment
• Explore how China ’ s educators use technology in their classrooms
• Study alternative education as a method of building a ready workforce
Here are some details about their travels from Paige ’ s perspective :
Sunday , June 24th We visited the Panda Breeding & Research Center . Here
CCS Teachers Go Global
we saw giant pandas and red pandas . Next , we went to 2 temples and to Jinli Old Street Market , then had dinner at a Hot Pot restaurant , what the Sichuan province is known for .
Monday , June 25th The best day yet . Lots of interactions with Chinese students today ! We went to Taziba Middle School where the students welcomed us with open arms and we watched an English lesson in one of their classrooms . We then went to see the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project , an irrigation system over 2000 years old . After that , we visited Dujiangyan Vocational High School where students performed various talents for us and we , in turn performed for them by singing You Are My Sunshine . Our hearts are full !
Tuesday , June 26th We visited Sichuan Normal University . “ Normal ” simply means it is a university for teachers , or a teacher college . This was so interesting because we held a Q & A session where both countries asked questions and sought answers from the other . We discovered we face some very similar issues and we also have some unique issues . We were able to offer advice to some of their beginning teachers about the most important thing one can do as a teacher . Our advice - build relationships with your students !
I was also very fortunate to be able to visit a place that was not on our schedule . At one of our lunch stops , we happened to see a building that said Borderless Kindergarten . Our reigning NC TOY , Lisa Godwin , and I are the only kindergarten teachers in our delegation , so we were able to visit the building and see their classrooms . It was a wonderful experience !
