Students Participate in Summer Science and Math Program
Five CCS students participated in the Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics program this summer at East Carolina University . Summer Ventures is a month-long , residential program for academically talented North Carolina students who aspire to careers in science , technology , engineering , and mathematics . Rising high school juniors or seniors conduct research around topics of interest — while enjoying the company of like-minded peers . Other locations for Summer Ventures are Appalachian State University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte .
Our students who participated are :

• Tracy Chen , Cox Mill High School
• Brycen Columbus , Cox Mill High School
• Melissa Kissling , Hickory Ridge High School
• Sarabesh Natarajan , Hickory Ridge High School
Participants joined 55 other N . C . students for the program . They studied archaeological field methods , biomedical research , biomedical engineering , physics , DNA fingerprinting , 3D printing , and neuroscience . They completed research , wrote a paper and presented their findings at the program ’ s closing ceremony last month .
Austin Beaver also was recognized with an Honorable Mention Catalyst Award for his work titled Anti-Gamma Radiation Shielding for Future Spacecraft .
Before embarking on her trip , Bumgardner said , “ I look forward to bringing increased cultural awareness and global impacts back into my classroom and to the wider audience of my school district .”

Elementary Libraries Receive Donation
Each Cabarrus County elementary school library received $ 100 to spend on new books . The generous donations were made anonymously and were presented by the Cabarrus County Education Foundation !
MPHS FFA Attends State Convention
FFA members from Mt . Pleasant High School attended the 88th annual State FFA Convention in Raleigh , N . C . As members of an organization focused on agriculture and leadership , students demonstrated their knowledge and industry skills by competing in Career Development Events . Chapter officers also served as advocates for Cabarrus County by meeting with legislators from the area . These students are passionate about meeting the world ’ s food and fiber needs , while growing as leaders in North Carolina !
CCS Students Have National First Place
Skills Central Cabarrus High School student Kelby Thornton and Northwest Cabarrus High School student Coleman Beaver both placed first in different categories at the National SkillsUSA Competition held from June 19-25 , 2016 in Louisville , Kentucky .
Boger and Royal Oaks Elementary Host
Literacy Night On Monday , August 15th , Boger and Royal Oaks Elementary hosted a Literacy Night at Target-Afton Ridge in partnership with the Greater Cabarrus Reading Association ( GCRA ). The event was held in effort to help promote the North Carolina Reading Association ’ s Young Author writing contest . After hearing Eric Carle ’ s book “ The Tiny Seed ” read aloud , participants created hands on projects such as making personal nature journals and creating terrariums . The GRCA also provided every child with a free book !
Teachers Traveled to South Africa
Two CCS teachers spent a part of their summer in South Africa as part of the 2016 Go Global NC teachers program .
Kelly Bumgardner , 2015 CCS Teacher of the Year and an English- Language Arts teacher at Northwest Cabarrus Middle School , and Angie Martin , 2016 Teacher of the Year at J . N . Fries Magnet School and an AIG teacher , were selected to participate in the program . Also traveling from Cabarrus County with the group is Jacquelyn Lane , a STEM teacher in Kannapolis City Schools . In total , 26 North Carolina teachers participated in the program .
These teachers spent 10 days visiting schools , experiencing South Africa ’ s cultural diversity and learning about apartheid , slavery , and human rights . They also had the opportunity to visit Robben Island , site of Nelson Mandela ’ s 18-year imprisonment .
Kelby placed first in the Masonry competition and Coleman placed first in the Technical Drafting competition . Both students represented North Carolina at the national competition by winning the NC State SkillsUSA competition earlier in the year . By winning the National competition , each student has earned the opportunity to be eligible to compete in the WorldSkills 2017 competition in the Abu Dhabi , United Arab Emirates where students will compete with others from across the globe .

CHS Student All-American Bowl Bound
Hamsah Nasirildeen , Concord High School rising senior , is the first Spider to be selected to play in the prestigious U . S . Army All-American Bowl on January 17 , 2017 . The bowl will broadcast on national television from the Alamodome in San Antonio , Texas at 1pm .
Hamsah is a force to be reckoned with standing at 6 feet , 5 inches and weighing a solid 210 pounds . During his junior season , Hamsah played on offense as wide receiver and safety bringing in 35 catches for 634 yards and two touchdowns . He is most threatening as a defensive back finishing his season with 82 tackles , including three for loss , and four interceptions as well as earning all conference in the SPC . He also boasts offers from multiple schools such as Alabama , Notre Dame , Clemson , Michigan , East Carolina , Charlotte , Florida State , Georgia , Tennessee , and N . C . State . Hamsah will bring along members of the Concord coaching staff when he begins his history-making trip in January .
