Congratulations to Emily Riley, Cabarrus County Special Olympics
Coordinator, who has been named the 2013 Special Olympics North Carolina
Coordinator of the Year.
Riley received the award during the 2013 Special Olympics North Carolina
Leadership Conference in recognition of her leadership of the local Special
Olympics efforts in Cabarrus County.
Riley, who took over as local coordinator in Cabarrus County in 2010, has
made great strides in growing the local Special Olympics program. Under her
guidance, three sports – roller skating, Alpine skiing, and flag football – have
been added to Special Olympics Cabarrus County.
The Young Athletes Program has grown as well. During her tenure as local
coordinator, Riley has raised more than $150,000 for Special Olympics locally,
with more than $15,000 coming from a Bunco fundraiser she started.
Prior to joining Special Olympics, Riley was a special education teacher
and worked for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Keith Fishburne, president and CEO of Special Olympics North Carolina
said, “Emily’s enthusiasm and passion for Special Olympics has taken the
Cabarrus County program to the next level. I know her dedication to the
athletes is second-to-none, and the program will continue to grow and lives
will be impacted for the better because of her leadership.”
Nominations for the award were made by local Special Olympics
programs.
Special Olympics North Carolina (SONC) offers year-round sports training
and competition for more than 38,000 children and adults with intellectual
disabilities. These athletes inspire greatness through their success and
provide motivation to the thousands of coaches, sports officials, local program
committee members and event organizers involved in Special Olympics
statewide. SONC offers Olympic-type competition in 19 sports on local
and state levels. Visit Special Olympics North Carolina on the web, Twitter,
Facebook or YouTube.
