Greetings,
The school year is in full swing with many
activities and events happening in our schools.
In this issue, you will find a variety of
information. We are pleased to share our new
digital magazine with you. We also introduce
you to our principal of the year, a teacher who
received a special surprise, and students who
are budding scientists, voracious readers, and
award-winning artists and singers.
You also will meet a few heroes among us –
the super and hometown varieties. We hope you
enjoy learning about all the great things going
on in our schools and in our district.

Schools on the Reading Track to Victory
Ten Cabarrus County Schools are on the track to
victory thanks to a literacy program sponsored by Dollar
General and Unilever. The 10 schools that participated
are Beverly Hills, Bethel, Carl A. Furr, Rocky River, Royal
Oaks, Weddington Hills, Winecoff, Wolf Meadow, W.M.
Irvin, and W. R. Odell Elementary Schools.
This is the fourth year CCS schools have participated
in the Reading Puts You on the Track to Victory program,
which touts the importance of reading and literacy and
ties in fun and excitement with the Dollar General 300
Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Throughout the 18-day program, students read to
meet and/or exceed goals. Approximately, 2,500 CCS
students participated, reading nearly 1.2 million minutes
during the program timeframe.
Prizes are awarded to students, classrooms and
teachers for achieving different reading goals. This year’s
CCS winners are:

Class Ice Cream Party – Class with the
highest average minutes read
Weddington Hills Elementary School – Ms. Norman’s Class
Class read an average of 1,157 minutes
• Dollar General Gift Card – Teacher with the highest total
minutes read
Weddington Hills Elementary School – Ms. Norman
Class read a total of 28,915 minutes
• Grand Prize – Student who read the most minutes
Royal Oaks Elementary School – Jackson Kessler
Student read a total of 1,170 minutes
CCS received a $25,000 ($2,500 to each of the 10 participating schools)
grant courtesy of Unilever, Dollar General, and Speedway Children’s Charities
for participating in the reading program. Each participating school also
