Congratulations to Corey Cochran, principal of Mount Pleasant Elementary School, who has been selected as the 2018-2019 Cabarrus County Schools Principal of the Year in a program sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Wells Fargo. CCS Principal of the Year 2018-2019 University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Cochran will now compete with other principals across the state for North Carolina Principal of the Year. After the state selection process is completed, one principal will be selected as the 2019 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year. CCS principals nominate candidates among their peers. A selection panel comprised of CCS administrators interviews finalists and selects a winner. Cochran was surprised with an announcement during a Mount Pleasant Elementary School staff meeting on Thursday, September 20th. Cochran has been principal of Mount Pleasant Elementary School since 2002. He graduated from Concord High School, began his tenure in Cabarrus County Schools as a social studies teacher at Mount Pleasant High School in 1990 and moved to Winecoff Elementary School as Assistant Principal in 1998. Cochran holds a bachelor’s degree in religious studies from Wake Forest University, teacher certification from North Carolina Wesleyan College and a master’s degree in school administration from the 2018 EC Teacher of Excellence Sara Lamb, EC teacher at Hickory Ridge High, has been named the 2018 Cabarrus County Schools Exceptional Children Teacher of Excellence! Sara was nominated by HRHS Principal Dr. Poole and Assistant Principal Ms. Graves who state that Sara “has proven to be an incredible asset to the academic community as evidenced by her relentless dedication and compassion towards the academic and behavioral success of her students and students at Hickory Ridge High”. Sara will be honored at a ceremony at the North Carolina Council for Exceptional Children Conference in Greensboro on November 15, 2018. Congratulations! 6 November/December 2018 • Parent Teacher Magazine Each regional Wells Fargo Principal of the Year receives a $1,000 cash award for his or her school and a $1,000 cash award for personal use. The 2019 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year receives $3,000 for his or her school and $3,000 for his or her personal use. Regional award recipients will be selected by February 2019 and the state-level winner will be announced in the spring at a special luncheon in Raleigh. Mary Frances Wall Center Mr. John Mooney, a senior music major at UNCC came to visit our classrooms to play his cello for the students on Monday, October 8th. The children and the staff enjoyed songs like “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and “Happy Birthday.” John, who is autistic, says he has been playing the cello since he was in the 6th grade. He loves to perform for his church, his community, school chamber group and orchestra.
