Concord Middle Teacher Recognized Aimee Messier, UNCC alumna and math teacher at Concord Middle School, was selected for a College Football Playoff Foundation Extra Yard for Teachers Award! She received $2,500 worth of gift cards for her school as part of a $10,000 donation from Michael’s. The award was presented at a UNCC football game. Cabarrus Tech Hosts FOCUS Night Cabarrus Tech Early College hosted its second annual FOCUS Night for students and parents. Forming Ongoing Cobra Understanding and Support (FOCUS) is run through the school counseling program to encourage social, emotional, and academic collegiate standards. Students and parents participated in various workshops throughout the night and guest speakers from the community spoke about emotional support, internet safety and decision-making skills. CHS and Irvin Collaborate for Spanglish Club A Concord High School student and W.M. Irvin Elementary School have been helping students improve their Spanish skills. Grace North, student at CHS, created the Spanglish Club, which gives students the opportunity to familiarize themselves with Spanish after school. Emily Francis, Irvin’s English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, and Grace, facilitate the monthly club. Bilingual fifth grade students also help out. Students play games, read stories, sing songs, make crafts and organize social activities to help them learn Spanish. The club recently received a grant from the Cabarrus County Education Foundation, which will be used to purchase books and encourage deeper learning.
