As an IB World School, Weddington Hills Elementary School uses an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. The school offers language study in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. Students are encouraged to take action through service to others. WHES Principal Mrs. Chasity Dolan was recognized and received a National Magnet School of Excellence Merit Award on behalf of the school during an awards ceremony held at Magnet Schools of America’s 36th National Conference hosted by Chicago Public Schools in Chicago, Illinois April 25-29, 2018. Magnet School of Excellence Awards are only given to a select group of magnet schools. Schools of Excellence are eligible to receive monetary awards and are eligible to be named the nation’s top Elementary, Secondary, or New & Emerging Magnet School. One of the Schools of Excellence will also be selected to win $5,000 and the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, which is considered the most prestigious magnet school award in the nation. To receive a national merit award, members of Magnet Schools of America must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. These schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme. W.M. Irvin Elementary School hosted its 2nd Annual Spanish Spelling Bee on March 15th. Congratulations to Ranferi Perez on his repeat victory as champion! After multiple rounds that required the use of additional words, Ranferi was the last speller standing and correctly spelled “refresco.” Melanie Ortiz Marin was the runner-up. Students in grades 3-5 were eligible to compete. The top 16 contestants qualified to compete in the bee from an initial field of 35 with two elimination rounds. Congratulations to Ranferi!
