The BioMoto STEM Challenge is a four-part challenge comprised of
Peak Body, Invention Showdown (apparatus design), Peak Mind, and
a Pit Crew Challenge. Over two semesters, these four components
are collectively designed to provide student participants with an
inquiry-based curriculum centered around STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics), physical fitness, and nutrition.
Peak Body and Peak Mind winners result from overall physical
performance assessments
and demonstration of skills and knowledge mastered, respectively.
The culminating event, held in the spring at Rockingham Speedway,
determines victors for both the Invention Showdown (apparatus
design) and Pit Crew Challenge. Results from those two competitions’
components are combined with previous results from the Peak Body
and Peak Mind components to determine the overall BioMoto STEM
Challenge Grand Champion.
Students Selected as Critics for Blumey Awards
Three CCS students have been selected as critics for the Blumey
Awards, Charlotte’s version of the Tony Awards for high school students.
A dozen high school students were selected from a field of 23 to
serve as this year’s Blumey Awards critics. These students also will
compete for The Charlotte Observer Critic Award, which will be awarded
by Observer journalists.
The teen critics are not the judges for the Blumeys – theater
experts tackle that task. Instead, the teens will write reviews of the
performances for the arts section of the Observer.
Congratulations to:
Katie Iacovelli – Jay M. Robinson High School
Theatre has been her passion ever since her first “big” play in
8th grade, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Iacovelli plans to major
in English and minor in Film Studies. She enjoys writing and is
considering a career in screenwriting.
Elizabeth (Beth) Kingaby – Central Cabarrus High School
She is passionate about the power of communication – from
the theatrical stage to the political one. Kingaby participated in last
year’s CCHS Blumey production of Next to Normal. She is excited to
hone her skills as a critic in preparation for her career as a political
journalist.
Shannon Sullivan – Hickory Ridge High School
Involved in the theatre since 7th grade, Sullivan has loved writing
her entire life. She has performed in productions of Urinetown and
Grease: School Edition and is thrilled to represent HRHS as a Blumey
Student Critic.
