Cabarrus County Schools has won its second i3 grant from the U . S . Department of Education . The Investing in Innovation ( i3 ) competition will award more than $ 103 million to launch and expand evidencebased practices that support educators and transform students ’ academic experiences . Noah Monroe , Concord High School freshman battling cancer , was met with many warm surprises on the morning of November 22nd . He was picked up from home by Jon Wilson ( WCCB ) who told Noah they were going to deliver breakfast . To Noah ’ s surprise , they arrived in a fire truck , Noah ’ s favorite , at the school ’ s entrance . Noah was welcomed by students , staff , and cheerleaders who were offering encouragement and well wishes . Mayor of Concord Scott Padgett was in attendance and officially proclaimed November 22nd “ Noah Monroe Day ” in Concord .
If the required private funds are secured , CCS will receive nearly $ 3 million for the development of EMPOWER : Expanding Magnet Program Options , Widening Educational Reach , which addresses promotes diversity and will serve an estimated 10,008 students – 32 % of our district ’ s 31,300 students . EMPOWER strives to establish a continuum of high-quality K-12 magnet programs intentionally placed in high-need areas , combined with the layering of innovative noncognitive , socio-emotional , and academic supports and services , which will increase academic achievement and educational attainment outcomes while decreasing the racial , ethnic , and socioeconomic isolation of students attending our lowest-performing schools . This will ensure equity of curricula and instructional access for students attending our district ’ s lowest achieving , highest-poverty schools including those that have significant minority-asmajority student populations .
The i3 program awards grants across three categories — development , validation , and scale-up — that increase in size depending upon prior evidence of effectiveness .
“ Today ’ s announcement reflects educators ’ deep commitment to students ,” said U . S . Secretary of Education John B . Through the seven i3 grant competitions , the Department has received more than 5,000 i3 applications and , if this year ’ s potential grantees successfully secure their matching private sector funds , it will have funded 172 of them at more than $ 1.4 billion , in addition to more than $ 260 million in private sector funding .
CCS won its first i3 grant in 2013 , and the funds were awarded in January 2014 .
