Board Cork news BHES Reads With ACC Mascots Students at Beverly Hills Elementary welcomed special visitors on Friday, Dec 4th — all 14 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) mascots! Students and mascots participated in a school-wide assembly designed to emphasize the importance of literacy and attending school everyday. Mascots acted out The Book with No Pictures by BJ Novak as BHES Principal Aimy Steele read it aloud. United Way Central Carolinas, the Academic Learning Center, and the ACC partnered to bring this event to BHES students.  HiRMS Raises Breast Cancer Awareness  Hannah Jiang, a 7th grader at J.N. Fries Magnet School, won 1st place in the Carolinas Freedom Foundation Patriotism Art Contest. Hannah was recognized at the American Airlines Freedom Breakfast at the Hilton Center City in Charlotte on Nov. 9th. The Freedom Breakfast consists of more than 700 veterans, sponsors and guests that gather annually to celebrate and honor those who have served our country in the Armed Forces.  J.N. Fries also had a 2nd place winner in the contest, Justine Keever. Both students’ artwork, along with all of the other entries, will be displayed in the American Airlines Terminal at Charlotte Douglas Airport. Students at Hickory Ridge Middle School honored those fighting and those who have lost their battle with breast cancer. During the month of October, nine students organized a school-wide “pink out” to raise awareness about the disease. While everyone was decked out in pink, a photo was coordinated to have students form the shape of an awareness ribbon. These students that led the breast cancer awareness movement: Danielle Cooper Eshika Singh Derek Prillaman Madison Pyne Anna Cornelius Noelle Edwards Marin Pillsbury Abigail Roller Kate Thompson 8 Jan/Feb 2016 • Parent Teacher News  JNF Student Wins Patriotic Art Contest PES Celebrates Veterans Patriots Elementary School fifth grade students held a Veterans Appreciation Breakfast on Nov. 10th. During the month of November students interviewed a Veteran and wrote a report about their experience to share with the class. Some students interviewed family members and others were put in touch with a Veteran and made a new friend! Students organized the program and breakfast for their Veterans. Fifth graders were responsible for creating decorations, thank you cards, goody bags, poetry, music, and getting food donated. Patriots AIG students provided entertainment for the morning.
