Odell Elementary School Wins Grand Prize W.R. Odell Elementary School received $10,000 from MyEnergyKit.org, The National Theatre for Children, and Duke Energy. The school was randomly selected from a pool of 224 entries collected from 115 schools in 5 different states. Schools earned entries into the drawing each time 75 students signed up for an energy kit, which includes energy-efficient light bulbs and showerheads. Odell earned 8 entries after 286 students signed up. Congratulations! HRMS Teacher Receives 4-H Honor Board Cork news WHES Kindergarteners Hold Pajama Drive The kindergarten classes at Weddington Hills Elementary School collected more than 75 pairs of pajamas for a Pajama Drive in conjunction with Scholastic Books. Scholastic paired the classes with a local agency and donated a matching number of books to the same place! Susan Keever, teacher and 4-H Coordinator at Harris Road Middle School, was named the North Carolina 4-H After School Volunteer Leader of the Year. Susan was recognized in February at the North Carolina 4-H Volunteer Leaders’ Conference in Raleigh. Keever created the 4-H club at HRMS, which has been meeting successfully for three years. Club members meet twice per month and enjoy cooking, learning about nutrition, hands-on STEM activities and various service learning projects. HRMS Dance Ensemble Crowned State Champions Harris Road Middle School’s Dance Crew recently was named the 2015 N.C. Association for Scholastic Activities Middle School Jazz/ Hip-Hop State Champions! More than 30 middle and high school ensembles competed in the first-ever state final competition on Dec. 5th in Raleigh. This the inaugural year for the school’s Dance Crew. LaShawn Summers, teacher at Harris Road, is the group’s coach. Congratulations, HRMS Dance Crew! 8 March/April 2016 • Parent Teacher News  MPHS Teacher Named NCHBA Teacher of the Year The North Carolina Home Builders Association named Ryan Shaver, masonry teacher at Mount Pleasant High School, the 2015 Construction Trades Teacher of the Year. The award honors outstanding teachers dedicated to educating today’s youth in the construction trades. Shaver was chosen from nominees from around the state and was officially recognized at the NCHBA 4th Quarter Board Meeting & Installation on Dec. 10th in Charlotte, where he received $500 and a plaque. Congratulations!
