Here are wholesome meals your kids will love.

The best bit: each takes under 20 minutes and requires 7 ingredients or less and barely any headspace, because sometimes that’s all we’ve got.

Trifle

A British dessert originally involving sherry, Trifle is the perfect fail-safe summer treat. Each ingredient comes in many varieties, so you can skew light and fruity or deliver a rich chocolate indulgence – and anything in between. And trifle is guaranteed to look gorgeous!

Ready-made cake: sponge, angel food or chocolate

Fruit and berries of your liking

Custard made according to directions and let cool

Jelly (flavor of your liking) made according to directions and let cool until it just starts to set.

Whipped cream

Using a deep clear glass dish, start with the cake and layer through the ingredients once or more. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of berries, grated chocolate, almond slivers, coconut shavings, glacé cherries or the like.

Use clear plastic cups for individual picnic-friendly desserts that are sure to score you some major points.

Veggie Skewers

These are extra tasty when grilled on the BBQ - grab chopped chunks of peppers (different colors if you can get them), zucchini, squash, aubergine/eggplant and thread onto skewers. Drizzle with olive oil, season and grill on the BBQ.

Mix together some natural yogurt with a tablespoon of tahini for a lovely nutty flavor, or add chopped parsley and a clove of minced garlic to the natural yogurt to serve with the skewers.

And if you want to add some red meat, lamb makes for a great combo with the grilled veggies.

Fish Tacos

Sear some boneless, white fish fillets in a pan (you can add spices if you like, such as paprika or cayenne pepper). Make a salsa with corn kernels, chopped tomatoes, mashed avocado, chopped cilantro and a squeeze of lime. Add to taco shells with the fish or if you don't have the shells on had, pop on a bed of chopped cabbage.

Pork Pita Pockets

Put together a slaw of shredded cabbage plus other extras you know your kids will eat - think carrot, beetroot, cilantro, or a red pepper.

Mix together some mayonnaise, sour cream and a splash of cider vinegar for the dressing.

For the pork, season pork mince and roll into small balls and fry in a pan with a little oil until cooked.

Put the slaw into the pita pockets and top with a few of the cooked pork balls.
