Volunteer Hours ‐ Volunteer hours count towards the family
obligation if the activity directly benefits Brother Rice High School.

Department sponsored events, sports activities or extra‐curricular
activities. If there are any questions about whether an activity
qualifies, please contact the Michelle Lievois at 248.833.2013 before

the Main Office.
SURVEILLANCE CAMERA POLICY
The administration of Brother Rice High School has great concern for the
safety of all students, faculty, staff and visitors on school property. To
better provide a safe and healthy environment, surveillance cameras are
used. Areas under surveillance may be recorded at all times. Video
surveillance is viewed as being useful in enhancing the safety of
students, faculty, staff and visitors. Protecting school property against
theft or vandalism and aiding in identification of intruders and of persons
breaking the law. Only individuals authorized by the administration or
designee may view surveillance video. In addition, discipline measures
for information derived from video surveillance may result in a
conference, detention, suspension, expulsion, and parent/guardian
and/or law enforcement notification depending on the nature and
severity of the situation.
CHILD PROTECTION POLICIES
On May 4, 1990, the Board of Directors of Brother Rice examined,
adopted and promulgated two policies regarding “Child Protection” and
“Child Abuse and Neglect”. The first policy concerns itself with any
faculty and/or staff person alleged to be involved in the abuse of a child
in school either emotionally, sexually or physically. The second policy
deals with a faculty and/or staff person suspecting “Child Abuse and
Neglect” by either a parent or guardian. State Law of Michigan mandates
reporting incidents of both abuses. The full and entire document is
available to each fa mily upon written request made to the Principal.
MEDIA CONSENT
Brother Rice High School showcases a myriad of talents,
accomplishments, and achievements of its students within the internal
publications, external marketing pieces, on the school’s website and
through social media as well as opportunities in local media outlets via
press releases.
If parents/guardians wish to prohibit all contact their son has in and with
the media, they must contact the Dean of Student Formation.
Otherwise, the school will presume that parents/guardians permit their
son, his picture, and/or his work to be used in the media under the
school’s supervision. However, the school has control over the media
only in the publications it produces and in photographs and official
Brother Rice press releases where members of the media request
permission to be on campus. In other situations, such as off‐campus
events, the school will not normally be able to prevent student contact
with the media.
Students representing Brother Rice or identified as students from
Brother Rice High School should not be interviewed by any member of
the media without consent from the principal and from their
parents/guardians. Students may not say or do anything recorded,
printed, or broadcast by the media that may be harmful or scandalous to
the Brother Rice community or to any member of the community.
Consequences for violation of this may be a warning, detention,
Saturday detention, suspension up to and including expulsion, or any
other consequence deemed fitting for the severity of the offense.
CRITICAL INCIDENT RESPONSE
The safety and well‐being of our students is of paramount importance to
every faculty and staff member. Whenever an emergency situation
exists, students are to observe complete silence and are to follow all
directions of any faculty or staff member in the immediate area. Any
student who does not comply with these requirements or whose actions
jeopardize the safety of others will be subject to disciplinary action. Drills
are to be conducted with the same degree of seriousness as an actual
emergency. The emergency situation will be signaled by the sound of an
alarm, by announcement over the P.A., or by a messenger if the com‐
munications systems have been disrupted.
A.
Building Evacuation/Fire
At the sound of the alarm signal, all students are to assume
complete silence and are to maintain that silence
throughout the drill or emergency.
The students are to follow the teacher out of the room and
along the evacuation route to Ambrose Field and assemble
by Band Grouping.
Attendance will be taken once classes reach the assembly
area.
Students in general areas such as the ARC and the cafeteria
are to exit the building and assemble in the designated area
and follow all directions of the adults in that area.
Students will be notified once it is safe to re‐enter the
buildings. Students are to return to class in complete
silence.
B.
Tornado
At the announcement of a tornado, all students are to
assume silence and are to maintain that silence throughout
the emergency.
Students are to move to the hallways quickly and quietly.
Students should sit crouched against and facing the wall
away from windows, glass and swinging doors.
Persons in the cafeteria should proceed to the bookstore
hallway.
Persons outside must immediately return to the building
and move to the nearest shelter area.
No one will leave the shelter area until the "all clear" is
sounded.
