ing a very similar “creature”. What fascinates me
is the fact that the reports seem to vary slightly
to fit each region’s unique characteristics. For
instance, the North American Sasquatch is the
largest of the reported animals, topping out at
over 11 feet tall. Since it is said to live in the very
rugged wilderness of Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia it would
have to be a very hearty animal, just as it is
reported. The Yeti of the Himalayas has wider,
more articulated feet and is said to switch from
bi to quadrupedal locomotion. This would be a
very helpful characteristic in the rocky mountainside and snow fields through which the Yeti
supposedly travel. The Skunk Ape of the Everglades is said to have a very pungent odor. One
would expect that of a primate living within the
detritus of a vast swamp. The descriptions of
these purported animals have not changed over
the centuries of reports, long before science understood that these traits would be helpful or expected of a “creature” living under these various
conditions. This, however, is just the tip of the
iceberg.
When considering the mystery of Bigfoot and its
brethren, one must ask how something so large
could go undiscovered by science for so long.
There are nearly 7 billion people on this Earth;
surely someone could have proven the existence of these reported primates by now. I find
the answer to this to be twofold. First, there is no
mainstream scientific effort to prove or disprove
the existence of Bigfoot. It is considered taboo
among ‘serious’ science. (I believe this has to
do with the most controversial piece of evidence
that exists: the Patterson-Gimlin film, but we’ll
get to that later.) Without the scientific community taking the matter seriously, we are left with
mostly amateur study. Second, the planet still
has many remote, unexplored, and uninhabited
areas. If every human being on Earth were to
stand in 1 foot by 1 foot squares, the entire population of the planet could stand in Jacksonville,
Florida. One thing that all Bigfoot type cryptids
seem to have in common is a very cautious,
