odd familiarity rushed into me.
I slowly backed away from the bridge and took
a detour, adding about a mile to the walk, but
worth the scant peace of mind I was able to take
from not trying to buck that glass wall again.
I hid myself from my family when I made it home.
My stomach churning with knowledge that wasn’t
knowledge. I knew I’d experienced something
unnatural. Something sad and dangerous and
ultimately pitying of my situation. But I had no
idea how I knew these things, so in my teenaged
mind. I didn’t.
A short time later, on a late night, on that bridge,
the glass wall failed. My older brother was struck
and killed by a drunk driver. His wedding to a
lifetime friend was upcoming. Their child on
the way. The details of the accident were never
known completely. Only that he had been struck
and killed at age 23. He had been neither a saint
nor a classic father-to-be. He liked to drink. He
liked to party. He had done a thing or two he
would rather not have told his child-to-be about.
He also had a heart of gold, and nerves of steel.
He was a talented guitarist and singer, and like
all his brothers, had grown up surrounded by
and playing music. His new chance at making
something good had been taken from him.
When the word came to me, I was at my sister’s,
as I slept over there off and on. We were told
