LESSON PLAN No.4 Hand-Coloring Digital Photographs Objectives: Materials: Hand-color a black and white ink jet photographic print with PanPastel. PanPastel Colors are pastel (dry) colors in a unique pan format, so that they can be applied like paint, making them ideal for use on digital papers. Grade Level: Middle & High School Grades / Ages 11-18 Hansa Yellow 220.5 Diarylide Yellow Shade 250.3 Turquoise Shade 580.3 Titanium White 100.5 Bright Yellow Green Shade 680.3 Sofft Tools: Sponge Bars Applicator with Replaceable Heads Paper: Black and white inkjet print on matte paper. Suggested papers include: Epson or HP Premium Presentation Paper and Canon Matte Paper. (Epson Premium Presentation Paper was used in this demonstration.) Discuss the history of hand-coloring: before color film hand-coloring was used to represent reality. Interest in the technique was revived in the 1980s when it became a form of artistic expression. Find images of vintage hand-colored photographs to share. APPLY WITH 2. Encourage students to study nature. A green leaf is not just green. It has greens, yellows, blues etc. Use this knowledge when making color choices. TOOLS 3. Discuss image selection: simple images, images with a strong focal point that can be isolated with color. 4. Discuss printing: print using less contrast than normal. The hand-coloring will provide the contrast. You don’t want areas of bright white or black. It is difficult to get color in areas without detail. IMPORTANT Prior to using PanPastel Colors & Sofft Tools, review the “Classroom Tips” on Resources page (4) Lesson: of this lesson plan. 1- 2 Periods. Note: detailed images showing the following techniques are on pages 2 & 3 1. Supply students with prints, tools and PanPastel Colors. Prints should be taped to the boards with artist’s tape or other easy to remove tape. 2. Teacher demonstration: teacher should demonstrate lifting PanPastel Color from the pan with the Sofft Applicator and then removing excess color by wiping applicator on a paper towel before applying it to the print. To further demonstrate the importance of this step, show the students what happens if you don’t do this. (A large swath of deep color will go on the print that is more difficult to blend. See no.3 below about layering.) 4. Start with the outside petals of the flower, layering Hansa Yellow, Diarylide Yellow Shade, Turquoise Shade and Titanium White. The center of the poppy can be colored with Hansa Yellow and Titanium White. 5. Optional step: spray finished print with a high-quality pastel fixative. Show the students how to use the eraser to gently remove color for highlights or corrections. Use the side of the eraser and lightly go over the area until the unwanted color is gone. Explain the importance of using a light touch and building up layers. It’s easier to layer on more color than it is to remove it. 1
