Gas main replacement by Florida Public Utilities
sanitary forcemain transmission facilities in this area. These
facilities will need to remain after completion of the program
and will need to remain in service during the implementation
of the program.
The consultant team coordinated with a representative from
the Town of South Palm Beach regarding South Palm Beach’s
existing infrastructure as well as any planned improvement
projects within the limits of the Town’s proposed
undergrounding program. South Palm Beach indicated that
they do not have any planned improvement projects that
might impact the Town’s proposed undergrounding program.
4.3.5 Florida Public Utilities
The consultant
team coordinated
with various
representatives
from Florida Public Utilities (FPU) regarding FPU’s existing
infrastructure as well as FPU’s ongoing replacement of gas
main infrastructure throughout the Island. FPU provided
atlas level data of their system of gas transmission and
distribution pipelines across the Town. They also provided
information related to their gas main replacement program

for the purpose of coordinating this replacement work with
the undergrounding program. The information included
proposed project areas identified by FPU to be completed
within the next three to five years, or by 2021. Representatives
of FPU indicated that they are flexible in the implementation
of the remainder of their replacement program in order to
better accommodate the needs of the Town. However, this
flexibility is subject to a mandate that they replace all bare
steel pipe by 2021. FPU agreed to review the desired timing
of their projects with the Town’s proposed undergrounding
phasing plan and highlight areas of critical main replacements
within each phase. FPU also agreed to continue to coordinate
with the Town as FPU and the Town move forward with each
of their programs and more detailed designs are developed.
Based on information provided by FPU, there are proposed
gas main replacements all over the Island. More specifically,
areas anticipated to be completed in 2017 and 2018 include
areas within Peruvian and Worth avenues and along South
Ocean Boulevard from Sloan’s Curve to Southern Boulevard.
Other proposed project areas include the remainder of
Chilean and Peruvian avenues, various areas throughout Mid-
Town, and the majority of the north end of the island, north
of Palm Beach Country Club. FPU indicated that they do not
have any planned improvements south of Sloan’s Curve.
FPU indicated that they plan to relocate
the existing gas main from the rear of
residential properties to the front of
the property where possible. FPU also
indicated that it takes approximately two
weeks to bore down one block, and one
additional week to perform milling and
overlaying of the roadway.
The consultant team prepared draft
gas main replacement maps and in
August 2016 met with various FPU
representatives to discuss FPU’s proposed
gas main replacement program as well
as the Town’s proposed undergrounding
phasing plan. Gas mains that are
not scheduled to be replaced will
need to remain in service during the
implementation of the program and after
completion of the program.
