35 PA L E S T I N E C H A M B E R.O RG Q A Shep’s Bar-B-Q & Catering Who in the family started the business? Q A Tell us how the younger generations got involved. I initially started working as a bus boy with a big dream at Shep’s in Junior High to earn extra money for clothes. In 1984, my dream became real- ity with hard work, dedication, and the support of my family. I was able to purchase Shep’s and here we are today, 34 years later. Well because of our grandfather, Spurgeon “Doc” Barrett, instilling in my dad, Paul Barrett, proper work ethics. I, Bruce Barrett, have passed on the same ethics to my 3 boys, Bruce Jr. “L.B.”, Bran- don, and Bryson. Why/how was this profes- sion/industry chosen? “No one goes home hun- gry,” Trust in the Lord, pay your tithes; those combined, will set you up for greatness. Q A Work was instilled in the family at an early age. Grand-daddy Doc said “A man don’t work, a man don’t eat!” Q A What is your business philosophy? Q What does it mean to you as a family to work to- gether? A Q A Running our own fam- ily business means long hours & even more bonding. Any predictions/future plans to continue the busi- ness for the next generation? I plan on handing down the business to L.B. when the time is Right. He wants to branch out and have another location. Q A Favorite business/life quote? “A dream doesn’t become a reality through magic, it takes sweat determination & hard work”- Collin Powell
