Although often associated with meditation, mindfulness is much more than a meditation technique. It is a way of being, a way of living. Mindfulness is about presence— being here, now, completely. Do you notice that your mind is often ruminating about the past or already planning for the future? Right now, are you skimming this blog to see if what I am going to say next is relevant for you? In the next few minutes as you read this, I invite you to bring your attention to your belly. Start to breathe in and out slowly through your belly. As you breathe in, your stomach expands, and as you breathe out, your stomach falls. Try this with me right now. Breathing in… and breathing out. Find a sturdy pose for sitting, as if you are a strong tree rooted to the earth. Your slow breath is equivalent to the gentle sway of leaves in the wind. Your body and mind are rooted to this present moment. Let’s practice this together for one to two minutes. Don’t keep reading right now—just breathe.
