For the 2017 Iron City Classic there was one mounds field used as well as a Hyperball and woodsball fields. This was a bring-your- own paint event (or buy at the field) and the variety of markers used was amazing! The mounds field was similar to what it looked like when it was last used in the NPPL but with much more green growth covering it. The first year these fields were used (1996) the mounds were straight dirt. Over the next four years they became more and more green. Now imagine 17 years later. You get the picture. From the get-go Bad Company, Fox 4 Darkside, Saberwolves and Team Image ‘95 looked strong, each winning their first four games (six for Fox 4 Darkside and Saberwolves). The stacked Philly Americans (Adam Gardner, Todd Hugo, Chad Bouchez , Samuel Monville , etc.) got off to a rough start losing their first two games, both on the mounds fields. They came back to win their next six games, looking particularly strong on the Hyperball and woods fields. The All Americans (Frank Connell, Spesh Robinson, Mark Biletnikoff, etc.) were the only team to win seven of their eight preliminary round games. Moving onto the round robin old school style semifinals were Bad Company, Philly Americans, All Americans and Washington Winstons in the first bracket and Team Image ’95, Fox 4 Darkside, Image and Saberwolves in the second bracket. In the semis each team would play their whole bracket and the top two scores would move on to the four team round robin finals. In the first bracket Bad Company and Philly Americans would each win two of three games and move onto the final. Bracket two saw Team Image ’95 and Fox 4 Darkside each win two and advance. In the finals Team Image ’95 would be the only team to win two of three games, but those wins were low scoring body count wins (21 and 41 points each). The Philly Americans were able to max one game (94) points and that one win was enough to take home the first place trophy. Tim Montressor (former Philly American and current member of Tampa Bay Damage), the game’s promoter did an amazing job putting this event together and plans for next year’s event are already underway.
