PAINT WARS • WORDS BY DANNY “FORGE” SELVES
Walking around camp enveloped with Siths and Jedis is one of those things you
will never forget. Lightsabers at every turn sets the tone for this event. Viper’s
Paint Wars was looking to be one of those epic events that tops the favorites
list. Our team setup camp and settled in for a great night of conversation and
catching up with everyone, the next thing we knew Greg Hastings comes from
under the Team Defiant banner and joins the fun. For those that do not know
Greg, this guy has energy like none ever. He sat and had a drink with the team.
We had a blast chatting about the sport and things that are coming.
The next morning as we were gearing up for the day’s action on the field, Greg
came back to our camp. We were waiting for the smack talk to start but no.
Someone asked Greg about his “uniform”. “What kind of camo is that?” Greg
went on to tell us, “They are woodland camo that I’ve had for a long time.”
We all just stopped. Greg’s camo was not camouflage at all; it was more like
an olive drab green and all one color, held together by duct tape and zip ties.
Greg goes on to tell us that he has never washed them from the time he started
wearing them. Some individuals in the group were laughing and others were a
bit disgusted. What came next was something no one expected. Greg asked if
anyone was hungry. Everyone seemed to tell him no, after the shocking revelation
that he does not wash his uniform. Greg asks if we were sure he says, “I have
Pop Tarts.” As he reaches into his pocket, we see him pull out a piece of Pop
Tart that had not been there long, but looked petrified. Next, he offered from
another pocket some hamburger that more resembled a rock. He states, “You
never know when you might get hungry on the field.” We were laughing so hard
that we were in pain.
This had to be one of the funniest things I saw all weekend. Greg is a great guy
and for sure, he knows how to get people going. A person with great energy and
a love for this sport that is unmatched.
From Team Defiant and Paintball.Media, we enjoyed your company Greg.
Thanks for making this an event we won’t forget. And for the record, we are still
not hungry.
