Watch Out for These FOUR Caution Signs I have a question for you. Are you a goal watcher, talker, setter, or ACHIEVER? Did you know the most common number to set goals in your life is 7? They are: Self (Physical and Mental) Financial, Community, Spiritual, Career, and Family/Social. We tend to be great list makers and dream big, and that’s great as long as you run every goal thru these 4 Caution Signs. Let me share. 1. Is this goal general or specific? For a goal to be specific (AND achievable) you must be able to visually see it as a reality. It must have color, size, weight, and or taste. For example. Let’s say I set a Physical Goal. My goal is to lose some weight by next month. Is that goal general or specific? It’s general! I didn’t say how MUCH weight by a PARTICULAR date. If I set a goal for finances and said “I want to have less debt in 3 years”, again that is a “general goal”. The questions you would need to ask to make it specific would be: What do I want my debt level to be in 3 year? Which credit card(s) do I want to pay off? Do I want to include my car in that list? How much each month and on what day do I need to pay. 2. Do I need other people’s cooperation to attain this goal? The two best examples I’ve seen of this? I had an attendee set a goal to sell her house all by herself. She said that had been her goal for 6 months with no success. I asked if she had run that goal through this caution sign. She hadn’t realized she needed other people’s cooperation to attain the goal. Her partner needed to agree to keep the house clean at all times for when prospects wanted to view it. She needed a mortgage broker to pre-qualify prospects, a title company, and more. The second example I heard when speaking to a group of single women. Many of them had chosen to set a goal to be married and have a child in 2 years. But through this exercise they quickly realized they weren’t even seriously dating someone who could become the father. Oops – that goal definitely needs other people’s cooperation! 3. What is the price tag attached? Every choice in life has a price tag attached. Want kids? Don’t want kids? Price tag attached! Want to stay fit? Price tag attached! I had wanted to be an internationally known speaker for years until I sat down with my friend Zig Ziglar who told me to attain that goal he traveled more than 250 days a year to make that happen. It was so easy then to let that goal go when I realized the price tag attached. EVERY choice has a price tag! 4. Am I willing to pay the price? Once I knew that price tag attached, I was NOT willing to pay it…and I lost the guilt! Are you willing to pay the price to be away from your family while travelling? If you want to stay fit are you willing to work out and eat properly – are you willing to pay the price? I believe wholeheartedly that you CANNOT have it ALL! What we have today that our mothers and grandmothers didn’t is a Buffet Table of Choices…don’t forget the Life Cashier at the end asking for your payment!
