Featured Stone: Emerald

The Pagan Gamer

This month’s featured stone is the emerald, a type of beryl (specifically, beryl aluminum silicate). Beryls usually come in colors ranging from bright green (emerald), blue, greenish blue (aquamarine), yellow (golden beryl), red, pink (morganite), to white. The value of an emerald comes from its even distribution of color. All of the science behind it is easy enough, but what are the magical properties of an emerald?

Emeralds are considered the birthstone of those born in the month of May. They are said to bring love and money into your life as well. They can be used as a powerful love spell. You take the emerald and charge it with your need and desire for love, and then, wear it on you at all times close to your heart. Keep it hidden though! The Greeks believed that if anyone saw the ring that they only wanted you for your possessions instead of for your heart. If you add an emerald to a spell for money, use it near a green candle for maximum effect.

In Egyptian mythology, Thoth, the God of Wisdom, wrote the secrets of magic and alchemy on an emerald tablet and gave them to Hermes Trismegistus . Emeralds have been attributed to calming storms, preventing miscarriages, and causing prophesying if placed under the tongue. Other deities associated with the emerald are Ceres, Isis, Surdurjaya, and Vishnu. Emeralds can protect against nightmares and aid in healing after breakups. They are even said to protect the wearer from deception!

There are clearly a lot of uses for emeralds as well as connections to deities. Of course, there are many more uses for this gemstone. The reader is encouraged to read into them and find out more. The emerald certainly is a very catch-all stone, so you should be able to find a myriad of uses for it.
