Il cambio annuale dei membri della giuria garantisce inoltre decisioni neutrali
esenti da influenze stilistiche o di qualsiasi genere di “scuola”, escludendo possibili
pregiudizi nella scelta delle soluzioni premiate, per quanto riguarda la tipologia,
l’interpretazione dell’utilizzo, il materiale o i sistemi di ingegneria strutturale.
I giurati hanno sempre background culturali differenti, provenendo da luoghi,
o addirittura da zone climatiche, molto diversi fra loro, proprio per garantire la
massima varietà di esperienze possibile ai fini di una scelta equa.
La diversità dei contributi, che in queste ultime edizioni provengono da tutti i
continenti, sottolinea molto chiaramente un aspetto: le soluzioni offerte riflettono
un compito nuovo, un approccio individuale nato dalle rispettive circostanze, un
approccio che, nella sua forma, si discosta fortemente dallo “stile internazionale”.
Proprietà legate in modo permanente alla propria località geografica, alla
topografia, all’ambiente circostante e al clima locale possono mostrarci
approcci diversi in termini di gestione dell’energia per quanto riguarda
l’illuminazione naturale, la protezione dal surriscaldamento e la generazione
di energia ambientale per la produzione di elettricità, per il riscaldamento e il
condizionamento.
Tutto ciò riflette lo sviluppo di un nuovo regionalismo architettonico attraverso
le varie soluzioni provenienti dalla ragione, dalla conoscenza, dalla competenza
progettuale e dal potenziale creativo degli autori.
Il Premio in questa edizione festeggia i suoi primi dieci anni con una giuria sempre
guidata dalla competenza ed esperienza di Thomas Herzog e con un membro
d’eccezione: l’architetto australiano Glenn Murcutt (Premio Pritzker 2002) nel
panel giurati per selezionare i migliori progetti dell’edizione assieme al danese Erik
Bystrup e ai docenti del Dipartimento di Architettura dell’Università degli Studi di
Ferrara Nicola Marzot e Antonello Stella.
Gli aspetti ambientali e climatici sono stati quest’anno ritenuti fondamentali dalla
Giuria nella valutazione della qualità delle opere e nella formulazione dei giudizi.
Per tale motivo sono state premiate architetture che hanno saputo raggiungere
elevate qualità formali anche attraverso l’analisi accurata delle variabili
ambientali, definendo edifici pienamente integrati nel contesto d’intervento.

solutions developed in
different areas and mediated
by the authors' creative
capacity, designing skills
and knowledge. Finally, it's
worth taking into account the
importance of the network
which stemmed from this
initiative: small studios
mingled with large design
companies and started new
projects together, awarded
students had the opportunity
to join important design
teams and thanks to a

special mention to professors
and supervisors of thesis
under development the
initiative also increased the
academic interest towards
sustainability in architecture
and engineering.
The latest edition of the
prize celebrates its first ten
years with a board led by
the experienced Thomas
Herzog and a special member:
Glenn Murcutt, part of the
evaluation committee with
Danish Erik Bystrup, with the
tough task of selecting the
edition’s best entries.
In assessing the quality of
the projects and coming to
a decision, the jury this year
has attributed fundamental
importance to environmental
and climatic aspects.
The prizes have therefore
been awarded to architectural
projects with high standards
of formal quality achieved
also through in-depth
analysis of environmental
variables, defining buildings
fully integrated into the
surrounding context.
In the “completed projects"
category, the jury has drawn
up a final shortlist of 10
projects, including three gold
and silver medal winners and
seven considered worthy of an
honourable mention.
Gold medal went to Rahul
Mehrotra (Mumbai, India) and
two silver medals to María
González and Juanjo López de
la Cruz (sol89) and DAP studio
(Elena Sacco, Paolo Danelli)
with Paola Giaconia.
Among honourable mentions
were awarded entries from
Chile, Austria, Japan, Spain,
Australia and United States.
In the “degree theses”
category, seven projects have
been selected, including three
gold and silver medal winners
and two considered worthy of
an honorable mention.
The Awards Ceremony will be
held in Ferrara on June 18th in
the presence of all the winners
and the international jury.
The day after, Wednesday
June 19th, to celebrate
ten years of the Prize the
International Symposium
will take place: Responsible
architecture, sustainability as
a challenge for the present, a
necessity for the future.
The event scheduled for the
afternoon at Palazzo Tassoni
Estense in Ferrara will live
through the experience
brought by numerous
speakers’ presentations.
International guests who
have accepted the invitation
to take part in the meeting
and present their works are:
Harald Stühlinger (moderator,
Switzerland), Thomas Herzog
(Germany), Glenn Murcutt
(Australia), Michael Hopkins
(UK), Rahul Mehrotra (India),
Peter Rich (South Africa) and
Erik Bystrup (Denmark).
An event that shows how
the International Prize for
Sustainable Architecture
is now an international
reference point for the
spread of a more responsible
architecture.
