Il progetto realizza un nuovo insediamento per 100 elefanti e per i loro
custodi nella regione arida dello Rajasthan, nel nord-ovest dell’India. La
strategia progettuale prende spunto dalla necessità di riqualificare un
territorio devastato dallo sfruttamento indiscriminato delle cave di sabbia,
utilizzando le potenzialità offerte dall’orografia artificiale creata dall’attività
estrattiva: le cave divengono così bacini per la raccolta dell’acqua piovana,
risorsa estremamente preziosa e strumento fondamentale di riqualificazione
dell’intero intorno territoriale in termini ambientali e microclimatici.
The project involves construction of new housing for 100 elephants and their mahouts in
the arid region of Rajasthan in north-west India. The design strategy is based on the need to
improve an area devastated by indiscriminate exploitation of sand quarries, capitalising on
the potential offered by the artificial orography created by the quarrying. The quarries thus
become reservoirs to collect rainwater, an extremely precious resource and fundamental tool
for improving the entire environs in terms of the environment and microclimate.
