SEASON REVIEW Ferrari: Cleaning up the mess As soon as it became apparent that Ferrari’s new power unit was not contender for wins let alone titles in 2014, the focus at the Scuderia shifted from fighting to firing. A six-year title drought is bad enough by itself, but a winless season makes it even worse. Stefano Domenicali was the first victim of the re-structuring at the top. Domenicali had spent his entire career at Ferrari (23 years) but his devotion did not deliver the results expected from the sport’s most famous brand. Domenicali was replaced as Team Principal by the outsider Marco Mattiacci (CEO of Ferrari North America) in April 2014. Mattiacci’s tenure at the top, however, was brief as his primary task seemed to be to clean up the mess by firing key personnel. As soon as the season finished, the Formula 1 insider and Bernie Ecclestone associate Maurizio Arrivabane became Ferrari’s third Team Principal in eight months. 60
