Beamish ’ s “ City Stanzas ” at the BBC Philharmonic and the Paris and Swedish chamber orchestras , highlighting Biss ’ commitment to building the repertoire . In the final two years of the project , he premieres concertos by Caroline Shaw and Brett Dean .
Biss has embarked on a nineyear recording cycle of Beethoven ’ s complete piano sonatas . Of the fourth volume , BBC Music Magazine said , “ Jonathan Biss will surely take his place among the greats if he continues on this exalted plane .” His bestselling eBook , Beethoven ’ s Shadow , was the first Kindle Single written by a classical musician , and he continues to lecture on Beethoven ’ s Piano Sonatas .
Throughout his career , Biss has advocated for new music . He has commissioned works by David Ludwig , Leon Kirchner , Lewis Spratlan and Bernard Rands , and he has premiered a piano quintet by William Bolcom .
Biss comes from a family of musicians that includes his grandmother , cellist Raya Garbousova ( for whom Samuel Barber composed his Cello Concerto ), and his parents , violinist Miriam Fried and violist / violinist Paul Biss . Biss began his piano studies at age six . He later studied at Indiana University with Evelyne Brancart and with Leon Fleisher at the Curtis Institute of Music . At 20 , Biss made his New York recital debut at the 92 nd Street Y and his New York Philharmonic debut under Kurt Masur . Biss has been recognized with the Leonard Bernstein Award , Wolf Trap ’ s Shouse Debut Artist Award , Lincoln Center ’ s Martin E . Segal Award , an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2002 Gilmore Young Artist Award . His recent albums for EMI won Diapason d ’ Or de l ’ année and Edison awards . He was an artist-in-residence on American Public Media ’ s Performance Today and was the first American chosen to participate in the BBC ’ s New Generation Artist program .
Jonathan Biss last appeared with the BSO in June 2012 , performing Beethoven ' s Third Piano Concerto , Günther Herbig , conductor .

Lisa Steltenpohl
Principal Violist Lisa Steltenpohl is a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School . She has served as principal violist of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and the Haddonfield Symphony , now Symphony in C . Steltenpohl has also performed with such ensembles as The Philadelphia Orchestra and The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia . She began her musical studies on viola at age 11 and , while a student in high school , was one of the youngest members of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago .
Steltenpohl made her Orchestra Hall debut performing Bartók ’ s Viola Concerto with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2001 . In addition to her orchestral career , she has participated in many chamber music concerts and festivals , performing alongside notable musicians such as Arnold Steinhardt and Leonidas Kavakos . Originally from North Barrington , IL , Steltenpohl comes from a musical family . She and her twin sister Anna ( oboe and English horn ) have been featured on the educational series Musical Encounters and have performed many recitals together highlighting the viola and oboe repertoire . Prior to joining the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , Steltenpohl was a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra . Her teachers have included Misha Amory , Roberto Diaz , Desiree Ruhstrat and Stephen Wyrczynski . She made her BSO solo debut performing Bach ’ s Sixth Brandenburg Concerto in 2014 .
Lisa Steltenpohl last appeared with the BSO in June 2017 , leading Bach ' s Brandenburg Concertos Nos . 3 and 6 .
Dariusz Skoraczewski
Principal Cellist Dariusz Skoraczewski has been described by The Baltimore Sun as having “ lush tone , expressive style and solid technique ….” He has delighted audiences across the U .
