On September 7, Marin Alsop and musicians of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra headed to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport to surprise passengers and passers- by with an impromptu pop-up concert. As an added bonus, this special “Conduct Me” event allowed individuals in the terminal to take turns directing the Orchestra. Performing Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture, Alsop led the BSO through the work before turning the baton over to the crowd. Guests of all ages took an opportunity to conduct the BSO, while Alsop looked on and offered some much-appreciated guidance. Though some had backgrounds as instrumentalists, most were classical music first-timers. Students, a police officer and even a pilot all took turns trying to prove that they could be the next Marin Alsop. One participant who was visiting Baltimore for the weekend from Louisville relished her time on the podium. “We have a great orchestra with a rich history in Louisville,” she noted, “and it’s so exciting to see the symphony here in Baltimore Below: Marin doing fun activities like this in the community.” introduces the BSO Stay alert for the next pop-up performance for a morning of Mozart at BWI. and your chance to lead the BSO!
