Welcome

There is so much to celebrate as we look to our new season and the beginning of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra ’ s second century . Maestra Marin Alsop has designed a season that at once pays tribute to our great orchestral tradition and also shines a light on emerging artists and composers whose fresh interpretations bring continued relevancy to our institution .
We look forward to a great year ahead , and are so glad you are part of the BSO family .
The heart of our season goes back to basics with indepth looks at Beethoven and Stravinsky — pioneers in their own time — whose profound influences are still deeply felt today . Over the next few months we present blockbusters such as Orff ’ s Carmina burana and Mahler ’ s Sixth Symphony . The artists sharing our stage are a diverse group , from the legendary Itzhak Perlman to the St . Lawrence String Quartet to indie band Houndmouth ( appearing as part of the Pulse series ). Associate Conductor Nicholas Hersh makes his official subscription debut , and Principal Pops conductor Jack Everly welcomes Broadway ’ s leading men . We ’ ll also present the granddaddy of all symphonic works : Beethoven ’ s Ninth Symphony .
Bringing music to Baltimore ’ s young people is an important part of the BSO ’ s mission . Our OrchKids program now serves more than 1,000 Title 1 students in six Baltimore City Schools , and they are turning out to be quite accomplished : some are now entering the Baltimore School for the Arts and others have won seats with the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras . For the first time , OrchKids has an executive director , and we ’ re delighted to welcome Raquel Whiting Gilmer in that role .
We welcome other new members to our administrative staff . We couldn ’ t be more pleased to introduce Tonya McBride Robles , the BSO ’ s new vice president and general manager . Tonya , most recently the executive director of Concert Artists of Baltimore , began her distinguished career as Youth Programs Coordinator for the BSO . We also welcome Rebecca Bute , our new director of marketing and public relations , who comes to us from the Sarasota Orchestra .
We look forward to a great year ahead , and are so glad you are part of the BSO family .
