Nicholas Hersh
BSO Associate Conductor Nicholas Hersh continues to make his mark on the mid- Atlantic region with exciting , innovative programming — most notably as conductor and co-curator of the acclaimed BSO Pulse series , bringing together Indie bands and orchestral musicians in unique collaborations .
As associate conductor , Mr . Hersh also serves as artistic director of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras and leads the BSO ’ s educational and family programming , including the celebrated BSO Academy for adult amateur musicians . Mr . Hersh conducts the BSO in a set of subscription concerts each season . He has also appeared in concert with such orchestras as the New World Symphony , the National Repertory Orchestra and the Southern Great Lakes Symphony .
Mr . Hersh grew up in Evanston , Illinois and started his musical training with the cello . He earned a bachelor ’ s degree in Music from Stanford University and a master ’ s degree in Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music . In 2011 and 2012 , he was a conducting fellow with the prestigious American Academy of Conducting at Aspen . Nicholas is a two-time recipient of the Solti Foundation Career Assistance Award , which recognizes talented young American conductors early in their professional careers . He joined the BSO in 2014 as assistant conductor .
Mr . Hersh ’ s performance credits span a diverse range of genres including opera , Broadway , pops , choral , ballet and film music . He has conducted numerous world premieres and champions living composers in his programming . In addition to composing the Indie / orchestra crossover collaborations for the BSO Pulse series , Mr . Hersh ’ s orchestral arrangements have appeared on professional symphony programs across the U . S .— notably his arrangement of Queen ’ s famous “ Bohemian Rhapsody ”, which saw worldwide success after the video of its premiere and subsequent studio recording went viral on the Internet .
Nicholas Hersh last performed with the BSO in November 2016 , conducting works of John Adams , Ravel and Tchaikovsky .
