{I n h I Story} On December 8, 1865, composer Jean Sibelius was born in Finland. His gigantic talent inspired Finland to found the Jean Sibelius Academy of Music in Helsinki and a network of music schools across the country. Thus Finland became a nation of outstanding musicians, among them conductor Hannu Lintu who leads the BSO in Sibelius’ dramatic Four Legends from the Finnish sagas in November. { I n P l Ay} THE BSO WELCOMES FOUR NEW FULL–TIME MEMBERS KEVIN SMITH Acting Assistant Concertmaster Kevin Smith comes to Baltimore from the Akron and Canton Symphony Orchestras. He earned his bachelor of music at the University of North Texas and a Master of Music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music. BORAM KANG Second Violin A native of South Korea, Boram Kang studied at Peabody Prep before receiving her Bachelor of Music at the Eastman School of Music. Most recently, she played with the Colorado Symphony. LIN MA MICHAEL FERRAGUTO A native of China and a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of of Music, Lin Ma comes to the BSO from a one-year appointment as second clarinet at the Houston Symphony.
