{ program notes Chang Woo Lee Chang Woo Lee last appeared as a cello soloist with the BSO in March 2014, playing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Jonathan Carney, leader and Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 with Lisa Steltenpohl, leader. Andrew Balio Wisconsin native Andrew Balio was appointed principal trumpet at the BSO in 2001 by Yuri Temirkanov. Last season, he served as principal trumpet of the Oslo Philharmonic concurrently with his BSO duties. Before his arrival in Baltimore, he was principal trumpet at the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta since 1994 and the Orquesta Sinfonica del Estado de Mexico since 1990, as well as the Boston Philharmonic. As a soloist, Mr. Balio has appeared in Europe, South America, Japan and the United States under such conductors such as Mehta, Temirkanov, Rozdestvensky, Herbig, Venzago and Lintu. Mr. Balio and his wife Laura launched The Future Symphony Institute, an online think tank that examines the complexities of making symphony orchestras financially viable while preserving their artistic missions. CH R IS TIAN CO LB ERG Chang Woo Lee was raised in South Korea, where her oldest brother worked in a violin shop. It was his idea that she should learn to play the cello. A naturally gifted musician, she won first prize in the nation’s most prestigious music competition, while still in high school. Soon after, she played for the legendary cellist János Starker, who was in Seoul on a concert tour. He promptly offered her a full scholarship to Indiana University to study with him. After graduating, she played with orchestras in Mexico and Canada before joining the BSO in 1978 as Associate Principal Cellist. Her crossover CD of popular songs, “Invitation to Romance,” is available at the Symphony Associates gift shop.
