Chang Woo Lee was
raised in South Korea,
where her oldest
brother worked in a
violin shop. It was his idea that she should
learn to play the cello. A naturally gifted
musician, she won first prize in the nation’s
most prestigious music competition, while
still in high school. Soon after, she played
for the legendary cellist János Starker,
who was in Seoul on a concert tour. He
promptly offered her a full scholarship to
Indiana University to study with him. After graduating, she played with orchestras
in Mexico and Canada before joining the
BSO in 1978 as Associate Principal Cellist. Her crossover CD of popular songs,
“Invitation to Romance,” is available at the
Symphony Associates gift shop.
