BSO musicians mentor
Montgomery County students
In partnership with Montgomery County Public
Schools (MCPS), the BSO’s OrchLab student
ensemble mentoring program continues to thrive.
Now in its fourth year, OrchLab is in residence
at 12 locations including two elementary, seven
middle and three high schools selected by MCPS.
OrchLab involves multiple school visits by
BSO musicians and teaching artists, who mentor
and encourage nearly 400 student musicians to
reach higher levels of orchestral performance.
Taken together more than 90 individual

encounters between students and musicians
take place each year.
In addition to the program’s school visits, the
program invites middle and high school musicians
to see their mentors in action. Students attend a
number of the BSO’s Strathmore subscription
concerts throughout the year.
Described by an MCPS official as a “jewel
that makes our young student musicians sparkle,”
OrchLab is supported by individual and
institutional donors to the BSO.

Madeline Adkins, the BSO’s much-beloved Associate Concertmaster, has been appointed
Concertmaster of the Utah Symphony Utah Opera, effective September 2016. Madeline
has been a wonderful member of the BSO family since 2000, and also of the larger
Baltimore community, in particular as concertmaster of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra.
We shall miss her, and wish her well in her new position.
