First BSO performance: 1991,
Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major,
Opus 61. Memorable moment: Played
the world premiere of The Red Violin
in September 2003—a day later than
scheduled because hurricane Isabel had
locked down the city. Reflections on
the BSO: “The BSO will always hold a
special place in my heart. I began my
relationship with this incredible ensemble
more than 20 years ago with performances and recordings of the Barber and
Walton concertos under the baton of
David Zinman. Since then, I have
become a frequent guest, enjoying so
many musical moments, perhaps the most
significant being our recording of
Corigliano’s Red Violin concerto under
Marin Alsop. The fact that I am included
in the BSO’s 100th season means a lot
to me, and I look forward to it being a
highlight of my year.”

First BSO performance: 1991, Camille
Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3 in
B Minor, Opus 61. Memorable moment: When I was 12, I had the honor
of performing with the orchestra for
the first time, at the Meyerhoff, and it
was thrilling. Reflections on the BSO:
“This orchestra was the first I ever saw
live; in fact, it was at a BSO concert that
I realized that there is such a thing as a
professional musician. Thank you, BSO,
for all that you have meant to concertgoers and the community over the years.
Congratulations to the BSO on 100
wonderful years! May your next century
bring even more adventure and brilliant
music-making!”
Leon Fleisher

First BSO performance: 1954, Brahms
Piano Concerto No. 2 in B Flat Major,
Opus 83. Memorable moment: In
1996, Fleisher and fellow pianist Gary
Graffman premiered Gaea, a piano
concerto for two left hands, written for
the musicians by William Bolcom and
commissioned by the BSO. Reflections
on the BSO: “Ever since 1954, I have
shared the various reincarnations of
the orchestra to the extent that I
feel very much to be a part
of the family.”
