You’ll forgive me if I wax nostalgic for a moment … I still remember vividly the opening of Marin Alsop’s inaugural season in 2007. The Hall was packed with patrons and buzzing with media. The electricity in the air was palpable as the first female music director of a major American orchestra took the podium and led the BSO musicians in a riveting performance of Mahler’s Such a commitment Fifth Symphony. lends great Fast-forward to 2013 as we begin Maestra stability to the Alsop’s seventh season as music director, which BSO as we approach she opens with characteristic flair with a new our centennial saxophone concerto by the most-performed celebrations in 2016 American composer, John Adams. As we have discovered, Marin Alsop’s inspiring leadership from the podium is matched by her passion to engage and invigorate our community through music. These multi-faceted qualities are rare and the BSO is fortunate to have secured her continued leadership through the 2020 –2021 season. Such a commitment lends great stability to the BSO as we approach our centennial celebrations in 2016 and beyond, and enables Marin Alsop to continue to shepherd the innovative landmark programs launched during her tenure, including OrchKids and the BSO Academy. And with Maestra Alsop at the helm, you can also expect more inspiring programming, such as Benjamin Britten’s profound War Requiem, which the BSO will perform this November. You can read more about this stirring work on page 10 of this issue. Finally, I want to encourage you to support one or more of the runners participating in the BOLT for the BSO run (or walk!) in the Baltimore Running Festival on October 12. You can visit BSOmusic.org/BOLT and make a donation to support your favorite BSO runner and its programs. We have so much to celebrate as we begin another season. I look forward to seeing you at the Meyerhoff! Paul Meecham President and CEO, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Life is Better with Music.
