Renowned orchestra director Arturo Toscanini was born in Parma and is considered one of the greatest interpreters of all time, directing prestigious orchestras in the most famous theaters around the world. The birth house of the celebrated director was purchased by the Maestro’s children and donated to the city. It has been since transformed into a museum. There is also Parma Cathedral, built on the site of a paleo Christian basilica in the twelfth century and home to the breathtaking Assumption of the Virgin by Correggio. It is a wonderful example of the crossover from the renaissance to the baroque period and a masterpiece of pure visual illusionism. Next to the cathedral, the Battistero is considered one of the most important medieval monuments in Italy. Built with pink marble between 1196 and 1216, it is an unmissable example of the passage from Romanesque to Gothic art. For lunch, we’ll be the guests of the Marchesi Dalla Rosa Prati in their splendid residence that looks over Piazza del Duomo and the Battistero.
