SHAPING A SHIPYARD
Archaeological excavations uncovered the remains of a main
wharf with a bulkhead over 165-ft long that separated the repair
yard from the cove. The wharf was constructed of large timbers
that still had plank decking attached. The excavations also found
a construction/launch way area to the west of the repair yard,
and the site of the “ships house” to the north. The shipyard
most likely included other vital elements not uncovered by
archaeology at the time.
