N 2014 SUSAN PICKMAN PhD, an

Auxiliary member of Lower

Manhattan Flotilla 05-03, and an

Assistant Professor of Security and Fire and Emergency Management at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, approached Professor and Chairman, Charles P. Nemeth, about forming a Coast Guard Auxiliary detachment to Flotilla 05-03.

After receiving an enthusiastic reception to the idea, she spoke with then FC Anthony Carter, who guided her through the Auxiliary approval process.

The detachment process started January 2015 and the Flotilla detachment was approved on June 9, 2016 by then DIRAUX CDR Laura Moose, First Southern District.

A prerequisite to forming a detachment with the Auxiliary required that an on-campus Club be formed and approved by the College. The Club became known as the John Jay AUP Club (AUP ACADEMIC COURSEWORK), also approved by the Student government association and the City University of New York legal department.

Students who joined the club, needed to develop a Constitution and they needed to have four meetings with fifteen students voting on the AUP Club Leadership, approved according to the student government and University guidelines.

Susan Pickman, a Faculty Advisor of the Club, assisted the students in meeting the requirements to become a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Each student would submit an application at a Flotilla meeting. The undergraduate or graduate students who have joined the Program, are following all the requirements to join the Lower Manhattan Flotilla.
