Storm Sandy hit Flotilla

04-04 in Sewaren, New Jersey hard. Flotilla 04-04’s home, a 40’ trailer was flooded with over five feet of water. The storm tore through twenty-four states with sustained winds of over 115 mph. New York and New Jersey were especially impacted. The team rebuilt. Shortly after the Sandy mess was repaired, fate handed the flotilla a second knock-down. As part of a project to upgrade the marina where US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 04-04 had its trailer a major structural defect in that trailer was discovered. Once again, acting as a team, the flotilla set out to rebuild. Here’s the story of a dedicated team.

Following the devastation of Super-Storm Sandy Flotilla Commander Tom Drzewinski quickly put together a team to evaluate the damage and recommend on how to proceed. The committee of George Reilly, Larry Petrillo, Tom Drzewinski, Sal Ruggiero, John Eberhardt, and Dave Ten Broeck held almost daily meetings to get ready their report back to the flotilla.

After one month the committee proposed a workable solution. The flotilla would host work parties to completely clean out the trailer, save salvageable items and discard the hundreds of pounds of water damaged items. In partnership with a major firm who shared the same waterfront and the Woodbridge Township Public Works Department, the trailer was rebuilt from end to end, new furniture was purchased, and the unit once again had a home.
