AROUND THE DISTRICT

S Division 14 conducted its annual

Memorial Day Service this year, hosted by Flotilla 14-04 on Saturday, 28 May at Tottenville Marina in Staten Island, we had the honor of dedicating our ceremony to an incredible hero who gave his life on the field of battle in Afghanistan.

In August of 2013, Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis, USA, “…placed himself in front of a Polish officer who had been confronted by an insurgent wearing a suicide vest…” while engaged in combat against the enemy. Staff Sergeant Ollis, on his third deployment to the Middle East did not survive.

The Polish Government awarded him the Polish Medal of Honor and the Afghani Star. The United States awarded him The Silver Star, The Bronze Star, The Purple Heart, and The Audie Murphy Medallion for his heroism.

We were also so honored to have Staff Sergeant Ollis’ parents, Robert and Linda Ollis, who are Staten Island residents, and other family members in attendance during the ceremony.

Honoring Staff Sergeant Michael H. Ollis
