For example, one of the sign-offs was to demonstrate proper wearing of the uniform and grooming standards. So photo documentation of the soloist in uniform was added to document compliance and a grooming/uniform checklist added in the QE guide. The remainder of the Auxiliary Band musicians are expected to qualify as AUXMU1, AUXMU2 or AUXMU3’s as well as others around the United States.

“We have to still come up with sight reading for keyboard players and refine the percussion requirements. “

Similar to NYSSMA adjudications, musician applicants have to perform a solo listed in the NYSSMA Manual according to the category of proficiency sought and perform music scales from memory. The last portion of the test is a short sight reading passage of corresponding difficulty.

AUXMU QE’s must first qualify as AUMXU1’s. Once qualified, any of the levels can serve as mentors for their qualification level or below.

“I am impressed with the improvement I am seeing in some of the band members as they begin preparing their solo. I can hear it during rehearsals. That is exactly why this is such as a great program”, commented Band Master, Keith Schmidt.

The Band Flotilla was formed in 2007 as a public affairs/recruiting idea. The band has grown to 60 members. While not all active, the Band regularly has around 30 members at rehearsal and performances.

Performances include concert for Veterans, Coast Guard Change of Commands, parades and Auxiliary ceremonies.

The Band, now known as ‘The Commodore’s Own” will be performing a concert in Northport Park on Sunday evening June 12, 2016 at 7 pm. Auxiliarists are urged to attend in uniform with their families and friends. Attendees are reminded to bring lawn chairs for the concert.

The second organized flotilla band in the Auxiliary was formed last year in Phoenix Arizona. The Arizona flotilla was organized by the same Auxiliarist that was Flotilla 22-7’s first Flotilla Commander, Bob Williams, who retired there about 4 years ago.

As of the end of May 2016, the Band has executed 12 performances, plus two soloist performances for a total of 14 appearances. On June 2nd the Band performed for the Change of Command at Coast Guard Ststion Eatons Neck. This was the third successive COC at Eatons Neck that the Band has performed for.
