advance our already considerable relationship with the United States Coast Guard.

Mr. Sutherland, now a member and Past Flotilla Commander of 14-01, had retired from the US Coast Guard as a LCDR in 1983, after a stunning career spanning executive officer duties on a Point Class cutter during the Vietnam conflict, to command responsibilities in the Port of New York/New Jersey, based at Governor’s Island, New York.

In addition to his military career, Mr. Sutherland voyaged to both Arctic and Antarctic seas on several occasions, and in addition to performing research work on more than 50 oceanic cruises, facilitated oceanographic research in the employ of Columbia University, also in New York.

The welcomed addition of Mr. Sutherland, who quickly

qualified as coxswain, and the Lady B propelled Division 14, as well as many members from

neighboring divisions into year-round operations, and introduced us to the concept of small ship handling by virtue of her 60-ton displacement.
