A rewarding way to partner with our schools.

Flotilla 24-03 Public Education Officer Steve Perrone instructs students in navigation at East Shore Middle School in Milford CT. The course is the product of a collaborative effort between the Flotilla and the Milford Public Schools.

The students enjoyed working with the real tools that navigators use, on loan from the Flotilla, as well as charts of Milford Harbor, New Haven Harbor, and Long Island Sound, in order to capitalize on their sense of place and the assets that are right here in their back yard.

In addition, we briefed students on aspects of the work of the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary, as well as some of the opportunities available to them at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London. We were very pleased with their level of interest.

The experience culminated in a small "graduation" ceremony in which each seventh-grade enrichment student in the district received (or will receive in the case of the Harborside students whom we will teach in April) special certificates and some Coast Guard Academy pencils, lanyards and pennants.

This new venture is a rewarding way to partner with our schools and further our shared mission of educating the public in meaningful ways that enhance their knowledge of and appreciation for our waterways.
