WORDS TO THE AUXILIARY FROM THE US COAST GUARD FIRST DISTRICT COMMANDER

To the men and women of the First District Auxiliary Region South,

It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve as your District Commander. In the few short weeks that I have been aboard, I have been incredibly impressed by the numerous examples of the great work that the Coast Guard Auxiliary provides to the First District. Some examples include: the outstanding Auxiliary representation in support of the Sector New York Change of Command, the operational support provided during the 2018 Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Celebration, the 5800 recreational vessel safety checks conducted, and the 1900 boat and 550 air hours dedicated to Recreational Boating Safety, Marine Safety, Maritime Domain Awareness, Training and Support. These examples represent only a small portion of the tremendous work that you have performed this year.

Paddle craft safety remains a top mission in the Northeast. Through you continued education and outreach efforts in direct support of our Paddle Craft Safety Initiative, I am pleased to note that from 2016 to 2017 paddle craft related fatalities decreased 11% in the First District. We must continue these efforts to reduce fatalities even further. Your hard work and devotion to this vital mission has already saved lives, and will continue to save many more lives in the years to come.

I recently released my command philosophy, which includes three guiding principles: Leadership, Proficiency and Teamwork. Please take a moment to watch a 90 second video where I am joined by Command Master Chief Hollandsworth in outlining my vision, our mission and each of my guiding principles. You can view this video and read the Command Philosophy on the D1 internet page at https://www.atlanticarea.uscg.mil/Our-Organization/District-1/.

You can also view the video and link to the Command Philosophy on our D1 social media sites: Facebook pages at USCoastGuardNortheast and USCoastGuardTri_State or Twitter @USCGTri_State.

I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming months as I travel to our many units across the Northeast. Together, we will excel at executing the challenging work of the Coast Guard in service to the American public. Let's go do great things!
