Diversity and Inclusion in Our Wild Spaces

from the Muir Project

REI Presents: Brothers of Climbing

BOC, an organization that started at a climbing gym in Brooklyn, tackles diversity in rock climbing. "We believe there should be more inclusion, better representation, and a tighter community. Too often we hear the same story. 'I am the only . . . who climbs here.' We want to change that."

James Edward Mills and others talk about the cultural relevance of outdoor spaces, the need to engage people of color to preserve these spaces, and the fact that the national parks belong to the American people—we actually inherited them. As Ranger Shelton Johnson says, “The sustainability of the national parks hinges on connecting with these communities of color. Because they will no longer be minorities.”
