The most common type of cardiovascular surgery in the United States
is coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). In fiscal year 2017, cardiac
surgeons on the medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center at
Dallas performed 298 CABGs resulting in an average length of stay of
6.2 days. Open heart remains the most common approach, however
other options may be available for certain patients.
Proficient in various types of bypass grafting, the surgeons on the
medical staff at Baylor University Medical Center continue to seek
advances in this surgery which will benefit patients. Off-pump
bypass surgery reduces risk to the patient by allowing the heart to
continue beating and circulating blood throughout the body during
the procedure. Another surgical alternative is a mini thoracotomy – a
minimally invasive procedure performed to correct valve disease,
coronary artery disease and congenital heart defects.
