Sarah Lenth, BSN, RN-BC, joined the
Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart
and Vascular Hospital team in 2009 as a
patient care technician. During her tenure, Lenth has left
an impressive mark on her co-workers and the hospital. In
April 2017, she received the Employee of the Year award
from the hospital and became the nominee for the DFW
Hospital Council in the category of hospital bed size 0-99
at its annual North Texas Hospital’s Workforce Center’s
luncheon. Her commitment to learning and leading led
her to earn a bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
“Sarah has touched many aspects of the Electrophysiology
(EP) department and the hospital as a whole,” says
Sandra DeJong, BSN, RN-BC, Nurse Manager,
Electrophysiology/Pacemaker and Non-Invasive Cardiac
and Vascular Imaging Departments. DeJong was
Lenth’s manager at the time and, together with others
in the department, nominated her for the award. “She
was a leader in the Magnet® journey, co-led the Patient
Education task force’s redesign, created the “Teaching
Nurses to Teach” instructional video, and revamped the
patient education teaching videos with the chosen vendor,
Emmi. She was instrumental as a super trainer for the
electrophysiology department’s transition to a new IT
infrastructure and implementation roll out.”
Co-workers say Lenth is a true asset to the organization,
portraying a positive attitude toward her work and work
responsibilities. They describe her as dependable, punctual
and a role model. In addition, she has a true love for
people and is always encouraging and respectful of team
members, patients and their families.
“She believes in empowering patients with education,
taking time to connect with her patients by sitting with
them, listening to them and empathizing with them,”
wrote her co-workers for the nomination.
FY17 EMPLOYEE TURNOVER
RAYMOND ORNELAZ
RECOGNIZED AS BAYLOR
HAMILTON HEART AND
VASCULAR HOSPITAL
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Each year Baylor Jack and Jane Hamilton
Heart and Vascular Hospital recognizes, with deep
appreciation, the strong and vital service of its volunteers
who offer support to enhance the patient and family
experience. Many of the volunteers have been patients or
caregivers which affords them an increased understanding
of the need for an ongoing communication connection
at all points in the patient and family members’ journey
during their stay at Baylor Hamilton Heart and Vascular
Hospital. Volunteers serve in many different capacities, one
of those being a family liaison in the waiting areas to ensure
family members are updated frequently during their loved
one’s procedure and recovery. Volunteers may also serve on
the Patient and Family Advisors Council, a collaborative
team representing the voice of the patient and family
as hospital teams design and build patient educational
materials or focus on process improvement opportunities.
During this past fiscal year, Raymond Ornelaz was
awarded Baylor Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital
Volunteer of the Year. He was celebrated for his
outstanding service to family members in the guest
areas, in addition to being a member of the Patient and
Family Advisors Council. His service to support the guest
areas included a regular schedule of two days a week,
in addition to stepping in on request to be a substitute
for other volunteers. Additionally, he was pro-active in
sharing feedback from the perspective of patients and
family members, helping to improve communication
continuity and reduce anxiety of the family members
during their loved one’s procedure and recovery. His
outstanding volunteer service has touched the hearts of
staff and patients, as well as the family members who serve
as a support network in the patient’s health care journey.
