Cardiac Rehabilitation Goes Global
In 2016, Baylor Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital hosted several
international health care professionals to help them learn about the hospital’s
leading approach to cardiac rehabilitation. Dr. Lucky Cuenza, a cardiologist from
the Philippines spent several days with the Baylor cardiac rehab team studying
the Return to Work program, designed to help patients successfully return to
their jobs. “I plan to start an industrial cardiac rehab program similar to yours
when I get back to the Philippines,” Dr. Cuenza wrote to the Baylor team.

A physiotherapist from Changi General Hospital in Singapore spent one
month with the Baylor Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital cardiac
rehabilitation team to learn about the program so she could start a program
in her facility. A delegation of four Chinese health care professionals spent six
weeks with the Baylor cardiac rehab team observing the Return to Work lab,
the methodologies used and the resources required. The delegates returned
to China with plans to establish similar Return to Life cardiac rehabilitation
programs using the philosophies they learned while in Dallas. The delegation
explained that there has been a significant increase in the obesity rate in China
as well as heart disease, so the approaches they learned from the Return to
Work program will be especially useful.
